Potential gestational diabetes

Last week the midwife suggested my sugar was slightly high in my sample. She then checked my first baby who was 98th percentile and said that could be two concerns towards GD. I do have a sweet tooth and especially days im in work and this particular day was a bad day. She advised if it’s up again next week they will look into it further. I’m now going cold turkey on the snacks to try and help but does it make any difference? And I’ve found I’m just replacing them with fruit which obviously contains natural sugars in which case am I not helping myself anyway?

I have GD and was advised to eat fruit as part of main meals/right after, so alongside protein to help the body digest the sugars. Some easy swaps you can make are swapping for brown bread/pasta rather than white, decreasing the portion of carbs and increasing the protein and vegetables, and having snacks like celery or carrot sticks with humous rather than sweet things. Or some dark chocolate with nuts/dates rather than a chocolate bar or cake/brownie. Also drinking lots of water! And avoiding sugary drinks. Now I just drink water or herbal tea / black decaf coffee. Make sure you do keep eating, smaller things more regularly helps to regulate your blood sugar. Hope this is helpful and don’t panic too much! Also even if you do have GD it’s not because of anything you’ve done it’s because of the placenta, so don’t beat yourself up! ❤️

All carbs will elevate your sugars so being mindful of how many carbs your eating will help you and when eating carbs try and eat some good fats and protein, try and drink sugar free drinks too , I get boiled sugar free sweets from Lidl and Aldi they do have carbs but not many at all x

So being mindful of bread, rice, pasta, potatoes ect will help you xx

Hey!! No judgement here at all but I’m a therapist mainly working with neurodivergent children and there are studies happening worldwide about the rise in autism being linked to artificial sugars. Be careful drinking/eating too many items with artificial sugars in during pregnancy as it can increase the chance of autism in your little ones, especially boys xx https://www.psychiatrist.com/news/maternal-aspartame-use-may-triple-autism-risk-in-boys/

Common misconception that it’s all about sugar, it’s mainly about carbs. Bread, pasta, rice, cakes, biscuits etc. I have GD and can’t even eat a wholemeal tuna sandwich without my blood sugar going high 😅

@Sarah yes I’ve never realised this until my post and here was me having a piece of toast to keep me going 🫠

@Sarah I can have pasta and pizza but one slice of white bread I went through the roof 🫠 it’s a minefield what your body does and doesn’t handle isn’t it!
