Milk at night

I gave birth to a 9lb 6oz baby, and at 3.5 weeks, he weighed 10lb 10oz, so he’s feeding well. He’s mostly breastfed but also had expressed breast milk recently due to a breast injury. Now at pretty much four weeks old, both breasts are back in action, but he gets stressed at bedtime. It could be cluster feeding - I’ve spent 2-3 hours with him at the breast, though he mostly suckles for comfort. Formula settles him, but I’d prefer not to top up. He feeds well during the day and usually nurses to sleep. Any advice on whether this fussy nighttime might change after his developmental leap, or what to do next? I’d rather not rely on formula for nighttime but he doesn’t stay settled otherwise 😩 maybe he’s also stressed by slowed letdown at night, I don’t know

He's just cluster feeding and ordering more milk! I feel like I steps first three months permanently attached to him tbh, especially evenings when milk feels like it runs out and he's trying his best to get it. It will get better with time once the supplier is sorted

@Maria thank you. Would you recommend a particular way of doing it: certain positions, often switching sides or sticking with one for ages? Just feels like such a fail at this stage when he shrieks as soon as he’s detached. And I realised how sore the constant “feeding” is 😅

I tried switching as much as possible to set up demand. I did pump and give him a bottle in the early weeks too, for some reason that made him feel fuller. Eventually I phased it out. You could try a dummy, if he's into sucking for soothing,, but if you don't you won't have to remove it either. I. Stuck with dummies now tbh

I literally just finished having a break down because I’m going through the same thing 😓 My little one is also 4 weeks old, and she would suckle but then forcefully latch off and cry and I kept going between both breasts and it was the same case. I don’t know why I felt maybe shes getting frustrated cause there isn’t much milk? And that’s why she’s latching off aggressively. Ended up topping her off with formula and she settled. Feel so defeated and my nipples are so sore. Im hoping she feeds fine during the night

@Mona sending lots of love. You’ve got this 🫶

We had the exact same around the same age - growth spurt or putting their order in for more milk! I promise it won't last forever. Lean into it and cozy up with a warm drink / meal you can eat single handedly and pop the tv on x You've got this x

@Hafiza 🤞 thank you x
