Gestational Diabetes

Received the dreaded news that I have GD šŸ˜¢ Feeling gutted. My blood sugar level was 8.8 after the drink and it should be below 7.8mmol. Any tips or advice anyone can share?

I feel you, I got this news a couple of weeks ago too. I just listened to the two episodes about GD on The Midwifeā€™s Cauldron podcast and they were super helpful. Iā€™m trying to keep mine diet controlled. Which basically means cutting carbs and sugar right down and opting for more protein and veggies. Most of the time itā€™s working. Some days I just lose it and eat cake though šŸ˜³ Definitely doing some small exercise after you eat each meal helps to keep the levels in check too. Even if you donā€™t want to go out for a short walk you can walk up and down the stairs a few times or do some yoga/do the laundry/dance about the kitchen. And drink lots of water! Try to avoid sugary ddrinks. Swap them out for herbal tea and water or fizzy water. I had a lemon San pellegrino the other day with dinner and got my highest score ever šŸ™ˆ Thereā€™s also a GD group on here, and feel free to DM me if you want to chat. Also for the finger pricking. Make sure your hands are warm and dry!

@Kathryn Aww thank you so much! Youā€™ve given me some great tips there. Yes, I intend to cut down the sugar and carbs and go on for a 15 minute walk after breakfast & lunch, hopefully it makes a differencešŸ¤žšŸ¼

I had it apparently, I didnā€™t change anything and my sugars were fine, if it was a home testing kit I donā€™t think they are accurate at all. Just keep an eye on it but donā€™t let it get to you. Youā€™ll be fine. I was also told my LB was big, he arrived 40+3 and was 6lb12 šŸ¤£. X

@Zoe aw lucky you. Yeah not everything is always accurate! Lol Iā€™ll try not to think about it too much šŸ™„ but hopefully small changes now will hopefully be paid out in the long run.

My fasting numbers are getting higher. šŸ˜© diet seems to be working but those fasting numbers are too high. Iā€™m 35 weeks almost 36 and heā€™s coming at 38 weeks xxxxxx

Weā€™re also on 97th percentile and I strongly think itā€™s because of that x

I know the feeling, I felt devastated when I found out I had it because I felt like my body had failed me and my baby. Donā€™t forget thereā€™s nothing you could have done differently - itā€™s linked to your placenta and you either get it or you donā€™t. I was diet controlled and cut out most sugar and reduced my carb intake a lot. I managed to work out what I could tolerate after a week or so - eg I could tolerate seeded bread with butter and peanut butter but not any cereal at all, and I could manage a small amount of pasta if I also had something high fat at the meal (like lots of cheese!) I found the website gestationaldiabetes.co.uk really useful, thereā€™s also a Facebook group . I subscribed to get access to all the recipes and was eating one of the GD friendly brownies a day by the end of my pregnancy. Itā€™s sometimes really hard but will be worth it when your baby is here!

I had it apparently too and didn't change a thing. Blood sugar levels were always in normal range. Baby was born fine and nothing wrong with his levels within the 24hrs of being born either. They kept telling me hes measuring massive and he was born 7lbs 15 (induction at 38 weeks) compared to their estimate of 11-14lbs! Don't over think it, you'll be fine

Make sure you eat little and often because if you donā€™t eat for a long period of time your body releases glucose into your bloodstream and your blood sugar spikes
