Waters breaking…

I’ve never experienced spontaneous labour so I’m curious. For those of you who have had their waters break before contractions started, how did it happen? Currently this is a bit of a fear of mine. Are they going to randomly go in line at the supermarket? Or could they just go at night while I’m sleeping? 🙈 Genuinely curious if it’s one of those things that is more likely to happen when I’m at home and relaxed. Sat on the loo perhaps 🤣 or in the bath. Just wondered if there was any rhyme or reason to it, so humour me with your waters breaking stories!!

i went to sleep at 12:20am on my due date, and woke up 20 minutes later with the bed soaked, my waters had burst. i mean, im glad my bundle of joy was a due date baby but he could’ve let me have more than 20 minutes sleep before making his debut 😂 so yeah completely random tbh. that evening before going to sleep at gone midnight, i had been bouncing on my ball eating doritos with extra hot salsa dip trying to induce labour so maybe it worked 😂 but it can also just go at any time, so it could happen in the supermarket lol xx

i’m nervous this time round because last time i was so anxious about knowing when labours starting, but waters breaking is the best and most obvious give away haha, so this time im like what if they don’t break and i have to spot clues etc haha xx

See I’m such a heavy sleeper while pregnant that in my sleep is one of the scenarios that panics me a little. Like I want him to come soon but also my mattress is quite new 🤣🤣 and I’m also quite fond of my sleep and not very good at being woken up before I’m ready sooooo… this would be a rocky start for me!! I think even if contractions come before waters you’ll know it’s happening. It’s when you start reading into every little symptom that you drive yourself crazy. Like ooooo my left nip is pointing south west today. Maybe I’m about to go into labour.

yeah that’s true hahaha!! i’d definitely recommend getting a waterproof mattress protector asap just in case, jr absolutely ruined our mattress 😂 i think you should be fine if heavy sleeper, i dont normally wake up etc, but i woke up randomly 20 minutes after falling asleep and i instinctively felt down below, dont know why i never usually do that when first waking up hahaha but i did and it was soaking, so i woke my partner up to check! and tbf when the contractions started they started so painful anyway so i think ill know if i start having contractions before my waters go. i really try not to look into the smaller symptoms, but a lot of posts on here are like that and its so difficult, just call triage!!! 😂 xxx

i went to bed at 3am, woke up at 6am needing a wee, had a wee, felt like i was still weeing a few mins after so told my partner and phoned mau they told me to come up and get checked. nobody believed me because i had polyhydraminos and everyone said when my waters break it would be a massive gush. got to hospital and as i make it to the desk my water’s fully go, big giant waterfall all over the freshly mopped floor (made eye contact with the cleaner, felt awful). i didn’t feel like a pop or anything i just felt the water and wetness😬

@Sinead I have a waterproof mattress cover that I panic bought a couple of weeks ago after losing some of my mucus plug but it’s never been tested in a liquid scenario so not sure how effective it’ll be. Fingers crossed!! How long have you got left?

@Aimee see on the toilet feels like a perfect place because at least it’s quite well contained. All over the hospital floor feels like something from a movie and, while not as ideal as the toilet, at least you were in the right place. I have this horrid vision of it happening in a shop and some poor minimum wage worker having to mop it up while I waddle away with soaked clothes 🙈🙈🙈

Mine didn’t go until I was about 6cm dilated by which point I was already admitted to the midwife unit at the hospital. They just kept trickling out with every contraction felt like a wee.

i just stood absolutely still cause i was shocked and it was the sudden realisation like oh fuck it’s happening😂 i even shouted to the midwife down the hall ‘what do i do’ and she was so casual and calm and said just come in the room and i’ll examine you😭

i turn 37 weeks on tuesday, my due date is the 29th, but idk if i can cope that long 😭😂

With my first...last day of work at 36+5, sat at my desk at home doing the final few important things (expenses!!!) at 6pm and they just went. Big gush and then kept coming...I managed to stand up as they went without getting anything on my desk chair and made it to the bathroom but changed about 3 outfits/pads before I went to the hospital within a couple of hours because of being before 37 weeks. Also have the paranoia that it was so obvious first time and we hadn't started waiting yet that I've got to spot signs this time!

@Becky this is the only way I’ve ever had mine go before. While already in hospital. And they’ve been broken for me, which is maybe why I’m torturing myself worrying this time that it’ll happen a different way 🤷🏻‍♀️ it’s definitely a safe place for them to go though!

@Aimee haha “what do I do” - id have struggled not to be like “get a mop” but that’s probably why I’m not a midwife 🤣🤣🤣

@Sinead I feel this. The PGP pain is real. I’ve only got a week until my due date but I’m so so ready.

@Ruth see this is what scares me “just went” no warning? No signs? One minute everything is normal and then boom, soaking 🙈 I guess it’s just a fear of the unknown but it’s wild to me that it can just happen like that

Nope no signs, I'd had a stressful/emotional 24 hours but had been fairly busy getting everything wrapped up with work and hadn't noticed anything in particular. We were also in the middle of making home made pizzas with step son. 😂🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️

@Ruth quite a wonderful surprise but I always imagined maybe people knew it was imminent. Maybe it’s nice not to know it’s coming. Gives you less time to panic 🤷🏻‍♀️

I picked up my 2 year old out of his car seat when I was pregnant with my middle son and thought oh have I wet myself but then I put a pad in and they kept leaking so ruled out it was wee 😂 it went like a huge flood for me though

With my first pregnancy mine went at 6am while sat on the toilet small pop and slow leak! Had my boy 24 hours later

Mine went at 8:30 at night while I was sitting on the sofa. I did get a waterproof mattress protector and always sat on a folded blanket on the sofa in the last few weeks of pregnancy just incase.

I got up at 6am to have a wee, the second I stood up my water went all over the floor, then they carried on going so I was sat in the empty bath until we were ready to leave for the hospital 🤣

@Zoe picking anything remotely heavy seems to make me pee a little anyway so if it was any less than a flood I might not notice! 🤣

@Laine good shout I might pop a towel on the sofa today. Hasn’t occurred to me to worry about the damage I might do to that 🙈

@Kiara ouch, long wait between them going and baby coming 😬

@Tiffany I was under the impression them going at home was more rare but perhaps not 🙈 sat in the bath is a good shout!

Mine went in hospital reception area..... and it was a gush lol

Mine were a trickle and so I put a pad on but kept feeling more trickles. I kept second guessing myself so called triage and they told me to come down so they can be checked. They just checked the pad for me but they did say if they weren't sure then you would be offered a speculum to confirm if they have gone
