Had mine already in my head that I wanted a c section ( also medically they said I couldn’t birth naturally due to my hips) it’s so much laid back and you’re kept in the loop of what goes on and what’s about to happen etc. I was home the next day. I also made a request to not be on the 7th of March as that was my birthday. They gave me the 10th as they don’t do electives on weekends. I then had a phonecall to say it was brought forward and I panicked as I thought they were going to say my birthday but it was the 8th instead. Ideally they want them done at 39 weeks on the dot but in my case it was 39+1 x
With my first I didn't decide on a c section until week 37 or 38, I got my date within a week. At first they scheduled me after my due date, I had to get the maternal fetal medicine specialist to change it and they scheduled me for 39 weeks 4 days, my 39 weeks was on a Saturday, I didn't want to be scheduled for that Monday, they were full Tuesday, so I had him on Wednesday. This time I'm having mine between 37 and 38 weeks because I'm having a repeat with twins, they're supposed to be letting me schedule it at my next appointment at 28 weeks. The day of I was told to be there at 8 and they would take me back for my c section at 10. They didn't do all the blood work they were supposed to, which they didn't realize until like 9:50 and then they kept having emergency c sections, so I didn't have him until 3:54pm.
When you get to go home depends on a lot of things, if there's any complications they may keep you. My son was big so they wanted to keep an eye on his blood sugar and we were still getting breastfeeding established because he didn't latch right away, so we didn't go home until Saturday.
I had my elective 4 days ago (39+2). I found out my date at 38 weeks via phone call. I just got given a date - it’s typically within week 39, inclusive of your due date. What happens on the day depends on your trust, some have morning and afternoon surgery lists. I got told to go in at 7am, there were 3 ladies on the list so aiming to do us all in the morning. I went down for surgery at 9:30am, had spinal etc. Went into the actual surgery around 10:05, my son was born at 10:13 and I was in recovery by around 10:40am. I then spent about 40 mins in recovery then wheeled onto the ward. Depending on how the surgery goes, depends on your monitoring/how long you stay. I had minimal blood loss and recovered well, as had baby. We had the newborn baby checks the next morning and were home by midday the following day.
My obgyn sent a note to the hospital surgical scheduler when I was 39 weeks and the surgery scheduler called me the next day to set the date. I picked the soonest spot which was 2 days later (4 days before my due date). The day was pretty stress free. We checked in at the hospital and an hour or so later I got to meet my LO. We even got to pick the music to play during the surgery and the doctors were very friendly and relaxed since it wasn't an emergency situation. Some doctors even sang along to the music we picked haha! I went home from the hospital two days later. Would probably do an elective again if i have another kiddo.
Thank you to all the women who commented here, this is something I've been thinking about and this is super helpful.
Thank you all for your responses! I feel a lot more relaxed about it all now x x
Found out about week 32 when my date would be. I was given the choice of 3 days that had space. Both were before my due date, it’s usually scheduled for week 39 but I never had it to those dates. Baby 1 came week 37 (they gave me a section on the day I went into labour) and baby 2 came week 37 as I got ICP. You get prepped and taken down to theatre. It’s like grid slots so you wait until they are ready. Takes 1 hour start to finish then wheeled into recovery room. 2 hours of observations and help with feeding then up to the ward/room. At minimum it’s a 24 hour stay due to surgery risks.
