One engorged boob!

My boobs got MASSIVE on day 2 and since then my right boob produces too much milk and my left one a normal amount. My right boob is literally three times the size of my left and I hate it 😢 I’ve had much so much different advice from midwives and infant feeding experts. This ranged from “always feed from the engorged boob first” to “pump a few minutes before feeding to take the edge” to “don’t pump too much as it will increase supply In that boob”, to “pump a few mins on the right boob and feed but overall feed more on the left so that the supply on the right goes down”. Really confused on what the best thing to do is here. Advice? xx

I had the same and I found just small amount of hand expressing from the engorged side helped ease it. Also cold/Ice compress so help swelling x

@Hannah how often did you hand express and did you try and feed less on the engorged boob to lessen the supply? Such a fine line on what to do! I don’t want to over do it with hand express or pump but also don’t want to leave it something it won’t go away!

Are you planning on BF? I moved to combi feeding so I just hand expressed a few times a day no longer than 5mins a few times a day (same with pumping) but I was prepared for my supply to drop. If you need to keep your supply up I think you need to keep pumping normally and the engorgement will pass. Check with your midwife team though xx

@Hannah I am still planning on breast feeding (I’m only on day 7). Just want to make the boobs even but it’s hard with all the contradicting advice. Won’t pumping to relieve just increase the supply? My midwife who visited today recommended out of 8 times I feed in a day I should do the engorged boob 2-3 times within 24 hours and pump before hand for a few mins. This should apparently reduce supply but idk 😓

I've just seen this which might help you xx

I had this, I fed once from the bigger side and twice from smaller and seems to have worked

@Hafsah how long did it take to regulate? 😔 at the moment I’m feeding minimum 8 times a day and of the 8 I’m feeding twice with the really big boob. Even after pumping for 5 mins (I get 60ml!) and feeding baby my boob it hurts and also barely softens the boob tbh. Just feels like it will never reduce but maybe I just need to be patient x

I felt the same trust me it will get better I noticed the difference after a week/2weeks of doing it consistently but make sure to feed a little from the big one if it's hurting alot because you don't want to block the milk ducts or any other problems

@Hafsah trying to trust the process is hard xx I will keep trying xx Just getting me down x I literally HAVE to pump on the right boob before I can feel any ‘softening’ to put him on. The let down is still so fast I need to give him frequent and long breaks x thanks so much x
