Too distracted to breast feed

Boy is 6.5 months old ebf and recently started weaning. He is interested in absolutely everything else except breast feeding . I try sitting in a dark room and no noise or distractions and he is still refusing it and I don’t want to force it as he then screams if it goes on too long. He’s not getting enough food to make up for the milk. I know milk feeds will reduce but it’s only been just over a week. This morning he’s turning down his morning feed altogether - he did feed some overnight though. I’m having to pump now to remove the milk and really worried about my supply dropping. Is that possible? Looking for advice 🙏🏼

My little one was also more distracted around that age. I think it's a normal phase they go through for sure. Bf is all supplied through demand. Personally, when my son went through this phase, I also started some pumping sessions to keep my supply from dropping. Just make sure you're not over pumping more than what your little one would normally take. Something to also keep in mind is if this is a nursing strike simply because he's distracted or is there something else going on like - did you get your period back (this causes a different taste in your milk), are you using a different lotion or perfume, could baby be teething and yes dealing with discomfort from that. If it's distractions only, just keep offering and maintaining your normal routine for feeds. Pump if he refuses. You got this! ☺️

I started giving my LO my milk in a bottle when he was going through that stage. It made life far less stressful, especially as he could still look around and be nosy whilst drinking 😂 Keep trying but if he refuses breast try a bottle!

Mine has been doing this since she was 13 weeks! I pump and bottle feed her during the day, breastfeed her at night as she is not as distracted

Thanks everyone. Unfortunately he stopped drinking from the bottle on New Year’s Eve - I called it dry january but now it’s dry 2025! Ill just have to persevere :) thanks for the tip about not over pumping too @Chelsea !

Hey Lauren, what are you doing with the milk you are pumping then? Also have you called the breastfeeding national number? Or a lactation consultant?

@Lucia I’m mixing it into his food while weaning so it doesn’t go to waste :) no not yet, I have used one before but this is a new thing so turned to the hive mind first!

Good idea! Will keep in mind thanks
