Formula in the evenings

So I've been told by health visitors that formula sits heavy on the stomach and is harder to digest, therefore makes baby feel fuller for longer. My 5 month old is only sleeping 1 or 2 hour stretches through the night and I'm struggling. I'm thinking of giving him one bottle of formula before bed but wondered if anyone else had any luck with this before I do it as I don't want to mess up his tummy 🫣 Anyone who just breastfeeds given formula at night and baby started sleeping a tiny bit longer? 🙏🏼

Hi! It’s true that formula can sit heavier but not necessarily true that baby will sleep for longer periods of time. It’s very frustrating but the frequent waking is very biologically normal and it’s sounds like you’re doing amazing at meeting babies needs. Obviously, it’s completely your choice what you choose, however could you maybe try breast compressions when feeding baby at bedtime to see if you can encourage active feeding at the breast for longer? I’ll attach some links for you lovely! https://breastfeeding.support/what-is-breast-compression/ https://laleche.org.uk/safe-sleep-the-breastfed-baby/ https://www.nct.org.uk/information/baby-toddler/feeding-your-baby-or-toddler/how-cope-night-feeds https://www.firststepsnutrition.org/parents-carers https://youtu.be/ZcAIUlBoY7I (Breast compressions by Lucy Webber) Hope some of this helps you make your choice ❤️ You’re doing great X

Yes ….not true my baby wakes up normal …and he takes formula now during the day and night

It's a myth that formula fed sleeps longer. If baby is taking feeds during the night, try to feed a bit more often through the day.

Be careful as it might backfire, baby might have a hard time digesting it since they’re used to breastmilk and could actually struggle to sleep due to gas or upset tummy. If you do decide to do this, I’d start slow. Like half formula half bm at first. But I agree with what others have said, yes formula is heavier but it’s not really true that it makes babies sleep longer. Not in my experience anyways with my babies. & breastmilk actually has melatonin in it at night which helps them sleep

My baby is strictly formula. He’s 3 months old and goes every 2-3 hrs during the day and then he’ll usually give us one 5 hour stretch at night and then goes right back to 2-3 hours. I don’t think that it would be any different if we were still breastfeeding, but I don’t know. Honestly every baby is different.

I’m really surprised your HV advised this! It’s really normal and maybe also part of the 4 month sleep changes. Your baby will adjust and sleep longer in their own time, I really don’t think there’s anything to actively do about it. Just sleep hygiene stuff like wake windows and sleep cues I think is best and keep consistent! Just to say, my 4.5m/o is the same so we are in this together!

I’ve been thinking about doing this!
