Milk

Hiya, just a question. My little 11 month old has just gone completely off of his milk he won’t drink his whole bottles anymore and is just starting to prefer food over bottles. I don’t know if this is something normal or something I should get checked. We try to do 4 bottles of 180 ml - 210mls a day still as I know you should still prioritise milk over food till about a year old but he is only drinking about 150 at best. Is there any advice on getting him back on track for milk? Or if it’s something I should get checked with dr?

I’d follow his lead and just go with it but if you’re worried about anything, it’s always better to get it checked out

Agree with previous post I wouldn't worry he's nearly 1 and if preferring food then that's ok. Offer milk and if he takes it great but wouldnt worry about it or try to force it. It's great that he is loving solid foods ☺️

@Katie thank you a massive relief off my shoulders

@Alex thank you, he just starts to say no and shake his head once he’s done but it just worries me that he doesn’t drink it all

If he drinks about 150ml for 4 bottles a day that's about 600ml which is just over a pint. I have just been through the same thing with my boy who turns 1 later this month. I go to a postnatal support group and the very experienced pediatric nurse that runs it says as long as they're drinking a pint a day then it's not a concern but if you ARE concerned then have a chat with your baby's doctor or health visitor. Does he have any other drinks during the day like cows milk or water? Also to summarise, a pint a day seems great to me and the nurse I see frequently, I'd say it's fine to follow his lead with weaning and as long as he's having wet nappies frequently and you have no concerns about his health or behaviour, you're all good. I give my boy 3 bottles a day and he drinks almost the full 210ml for those, one before bed, one when he wakes up, and one before the afternoon nap. All babies are different.

My boy sometimes doesn't finish the afternoon bottle but will drink some water with lunch and dinner so I'm not worried (:

@Elizabeth he does have water throughout the day too, I’m working full time as well 5 days a week so he’s with my mum throughout the day and I get a message every time he has a bottle and how much he drink and has water although he doesn’t drink a lot of it. He has about 6 wet nappies a day and sleeps from 7pm till 7am so a very good sleeper. Just worrying that he doesn’t have enough milk

@Willow it sounds like enough to me, and it's great he has sips of water too. A good sleeper, has 6 wet nappies daily, no other concerns. It all sounds great. But tbh if you're worried, it is MORE than worth contacting your health visitor. I have a special kind as I'm young and had so much going on during pregnancy and after but I assume you have a mobile/office number/email for your health visitor and you could just send over a quick message asking 1) if they think what he drinks is enough and 2) if it isn't, what could you try to increase it. The likelihood in my uneducated opinion is that they'll tell you he's doing great and you're doing great and there's no need to worry, but I think it's worth you asking anyway to feel better, and if I'm wrong then you asked and got the right information. I hope you and your baby boy are doing well 😊

Also to add, the NHS Start For Life page says "a 10-12 month old may need around 400ml of first infant formula a day, but just use this as a guide" so anything from 400ml to finishing all his bottles will be perfect for him according to this source. @Elizabeth thank you so much ☺️

My daughter is nearly 11 months. She definitely prefers food now instead of milk. It's completely fine, if he's gone off milk but likes things like yogurt and cheese, you can get calcium into him other ways x

@Parker he loves yogurts, has one every day. Thank you x
