Colostrum

Hi, this is actually my second pregnancy - I’m just over 37 weeks. I breastfed my 1st for about 28 months so feeling confident enough with doing it again. However, I met with my health visitor recently and she asked me have I started to collect colostrum yet ?? I was never told anything about this in my first pregnancy and to be honest, I don’t know what it is, what to do , when etc? I felt embarrassed to ask her. Please can someone advise me on what this is and how to collect? TIA x

https://youtu.be/H2zpC5bdcIg?si=7Iff3ctWU4aj6N8O I watched this video which I found helpful. I massage for a couple of mins, mainly just needing my knuckles in gently and then squeeze. I was originally trying to syringe from the nipple but find it easier now to use a sterilised formula cup thing and then get it out of there. It took me a few tries to get any out and each time I got more. Hope this helps xx

Colostrum is the first milk substance a baby will be provided with. It is not essential to express and collect this, though some are advised to (primarily those who have GD)

I didn’t do it. It’s not essential in my opinion
