I usually change him sometime within a 2-4 hour timeframe when it’s only pee. When it’s poop, I change immediately if he’s awake but wait if he’s sleeping.
@Elizabeth same here! He never really cries or communicates that he needs a change so I’ve just been guessing and trying to make sure I change every couple hours or check if he’s gone
@Lydia do you have a way you know if he’s pooped? My little guy seems to like to fake us out with crazy farts but nothing in his diaper 😅
I change my daughter every 1-3 hrs as well! if she’s sleeping fine and is comfortable and I think she needs a change then i’ll wait till the next time I have to wake her to feed. Or if it’s really obvious she’s crapped her pants I’ll change her then 😂 I also try to do bicycles with her before changing so I can get any last toots out/ avoid a blowout
@Lyrica if it lingers after like 15 minutes, that’s how we know mine has pooped lol he has a lot of gas too but that smell is only temporary
every time it’s soiled, even with pee. it’s crazy to me that parents just let their kids sit in dirty diapers even if they “don’t seem to mind it”😅 as a healthcare worker, i can confidently say leaving your baby in dirty diapers is an infection risk and will cause skin breakdown and rashes.
So I check every time she wants a feed but my girl also fusses when she’s wet/dirty so it’s easy to keep up with
If you lift his bum and it feels really heavy then you should probably change as the diaper might not provide enough absorption to keep him dry if it's heavy with pee. Other than that, change immediately for poop cause they get rashes easily and consider changing before or after every feeding to have a routine so you can be sure it doesn't go too long unnoticed.
I change it immediately upon waking, before sleeping, if I hear her poop (its usually pretty obvious lol) and before we go anywhere in the car or stroller. At minimum you should change it every 2 hours. During the night I will change it less frequently to avoid disturbing sleep since we co sleep and breastfeed on bed.
@Felix that’s a really good idea about the bicycles! Our little guy loves to wait until we take the diaper off before farting then shooting poop everywhere 😅😅😅
@Riley I definitely try and change him every time it’s soiled even if it’s just pee but just wasn’t sure when he pees other than the diaper line. Definitely will be trying the tricks everyone mentioned cause he just doesn’t seem to ever care about a soiled diaper so I don’t get any cues. I’m a first time mom and am so lost on all things baby 😅. Peanut and peanut everyone’s responses definitely helps!
i change them as soon as i notice it’s dirty. i check at wake up, post feed & pre nap
@Lyrica i always rely on the diaper line and do a little feel, usually if it’s loose/crinkly it’s dry enough, if it feels more firm and saggy i can tell it’s wet! you got this 🫶🏻
This is all very helpful thank you guys!! I felt like I was losing my mind having to check every 30 mins since he doesn’t really give me cues. Other than a smell of course.

@Emilie that’s a good idea! I try and keep it scheduled but I’ve definitely missed some pee diapers between checks and since I have him always dressed I don’t want to undress just to check every time for the diaper line change. So I was trying to figure out how I know he’s had a soiled diaper without the diaper line check every time.
@Riley ooo that’s a good idea thank you!! Thank you for the kind words too! ❤️
I change mine everytime he eats. No baby wants to sit in a wet diaper🙏🏽 I think every 2-3 hours is perfect. My baby eats every 2-3 hours so it matches up perfectly
Every time it’s dirty is when you change it
I check his diaper every hour! There are diapers that have yellow lines on them that turn blue when it's time to change them if that helps! I believe it's Pampers brand
@Lyrica I do the sniff test 🤣
My girl is super gassy too. I check every couple hours. If there's no blue line I still peak inside to see if there's poop.
I peek in the leg hole if he has a suspicious fart but otherwise I change at every feed and when I notice the blue line. Obviously longer stretches through the night but my tracking app averages me at about 2 hours between changes
@KayLee I was curious about this too. If baby is in a deep sleep should I wake him up to change him? I would physically have to undress him from his swaddle and if he’s having good sleep I don’t want to wake him. But in turn I also don’t want him in a wet or poopy diaper a long time. Never knew I could think so much about diapers 😅
@Lyrica if i notice its dirty, i change it! if its in the middle of the night and were sleeping, i check/change before feeds since he has to wake up anyways and leave it at that unless i hear him do a giant poop, then he’s getting changed regardless of if hes sleeping haha but any other time, if they’re in a deep sleep, i’ll change him wherever he’s sleeping and just unzip the bottom part of the swaddle, open it up and he barely notices. even if he does wake he’ll almost always fall right back asleep - sometimes with a little soothing
@Lyrica my little one (though, he’s only a month) doesn’t often have big poops in the night. I only change him when we wake up for feeds which is never more than 4 hrs max. The past few nights he’s actually had only pees in the night! Though admittedly once about a week or two ago he had a poo diaper during one of his longer night stretches that I didn’t know about and woke up with diaper rash. We do the best we can (‘:
@Riley ahh that makes sense!! My baby absolutely hates a diaper change with a burning passion so he cries and screams every time we do it even if we keep him half dressed 😅 might just have to bite the bullet and wake him up cause I definitely don’t want him sitting in poop.
I’ve been wondering that too. My little guy doesn’t seem to care when his diaper is dirty so we never really know
