NIPT tests, advice please!

Hey guys, I’ve got my NIPT tests this Saturday (I’ll be 10+ 6) via a private doctor and I’m super nervous 🙈 who else has had NIPT’s done, and how long did it take for you to get the results? Did a doctor call you, or did you just get sent a report? I’ll be on a business trip the following week and I’m terrified of receiving any bad news abroad….. I’m sure everything will be fine, first baby nerves x

How come you have done this privately? Is this not the test you get at your 12 weeks scan on the nhs?

@Emma yeah they usually do this at 12 weeks

It’s offered to mums who have high calculated risk at 12 weeks or if there’s any concern on the scan. I really don’t think it’s offered routinely but may be different on different hospitals

@Emma it’s not offered routinely. Only if the scan comes back with a high risk they will offer the NIPT or Harmony. Incog my sister had it privately. I’m pretty sure she got it back a week later into her email. I’m sure they’ll explain the process and if there is any concerns they’ll likely call you to discuss x

@Jana I think it might differ from the hospital then because I wasn’t high risk and nothing abnormal on my scans and they gave me the option to do it

@Emma yes I can get them on NHS but the private ones are 99.5% accurate and I think nhs is 85% ish

@Emma on the NHS you get offered the combined test that screens for risk of downs, Edwards and pataus symdromes at your 12 week scan or if they can’t get the measurments the quad test at 16 weeks screens for downs. It’s only if this comes back high risk or you have a history of babies with chromosomal abnormalities that the NIPT is offered on the nhs. This is why some choose to go private for it as it’s more accurate than the combined or quad test

@Emma it’s not the same test, the nhs one is not that accurate and worries mums quite often for no reason

I had mine done privately and got the results in 4 working days. It’s so soooooo worth it :)

I had this done privately for my first and had the results back in a week! So worth it xx

@Ceri-Ann what’s different to the combined nhs test to the nipt?

Sorry please correct me if this is not right- The nhs 12 week appointment is a scan and blood test to check for downs, Edward’s and Pataus. The NIPT is just a blood test instead of doing scan and blood that checks for the same 3 conditions ???

@Emma they’re not the same test. A standard 12 week screening provides a risk assessment for chromosomal abnormalities, while NIPT can directly identify the presence of certain chromosomal abnormalities through testing the fetal DNA

@Emma the combined test is not as accurate which is why the nipt is offered after. The nipt is still not diagnostic and looks at risks still so if you wanted diagnosis if this was high risk you would still be offered amniocentesis or CVS for diagnosis

@Jenna thank you for clarifying, this is my second and I haven’t heard of it before

I got mine via email, but it was good news. So perhaps they would call if not. It was 6 days I think, hoping all goes well!

I had mine done in a Friday and the result was with me on the Wednesday. The nurse called me and then received a letter in the post xxx
